ABOUT ME :

Elisabete Oliveira - Founder & CEO

Born in the Douro Valley in northern Portugal , I moved to Madeira Island when I was two years old; a place that quickly became my second home. I grew up surrounded by the rich flavours and traditions of Portuguese cooking. Some of my earliest memories are in the kitchen with my mum ( Mãe ) and nan ( Avó ); the smell of the food, the sound of laughter and the joy that came from sharing food made with love. They cooked from the heart , using instinct, tradition and passion.

That's where my love for food was born. Watching them taught me that cooking isn't just about ingredients; it's about connection, care and creating something that brings people together.

After nearly 27 years working in Hospitality, I've learned so much about food, flavour and what truly makes a meal memorable. But every dish I create still carries the same spirit that filled our family kitchen.

The recipes for Carago ; the tarts, the bread and the Piri-Piri Sauce ; are all my own creation, from years of experience, love and inspiration passed down through generations. My mum ( Mãe ) and nan ( Avó ) may not have written their recipes down , but they gave me something even better; the heart and soul that lives in every drop, bite and batch that I make.

The name " CARAGO " itself is a little tribute to my nan ( Avó ), it was one of her favourite words ; a Northern Portuguese slang for " DAMN". She said it with such character and spirit that it became part of her charm; and now; part of mine.

Carago Piri-Piri Sauce is more than a business; it's a homage to her, to my family, to Portugal and the joy of sharing food made with love. Because for me every jar, tart and loaf tells the same story:

" The Soul of Portugal in Every Drop"

Dedication to my Mãe Piedade and Avó Palmira , with Love

For my amazing mum Piedade and nan Palmira ; the heart of everything I do.

Mum, your love, laughter and strength continue to guide me every single day. Nan, though you're no longer here, your warmth and wisdom live on every recipe and every memory.

You both taught me that food isn't just for the table; it's for the heart.

Everything that I create in my kitchen carries a piece of both of you. You are the strongest women I know, and you've taught me to never give up and Carago ( Damn), I don't quit.

Thank you for filling my life with flavour and love. I love you both forever and ever.

" Amo vocês para sempre . Obrigada Mãe e Avó "
